The four buyer types

Knowing which one you are talking to explains the number they quote.

General scrap yards buy by weight against commodity grades. They are the right buyer for structural steel, mixed non-ferrous, aluminium, whole cars and anything where weight is the value. They are the wrong buyer for anything whose value is inside it.

Specialist recyclers assay or price by part number. PGM recyclers for converters and diesel filters, battery recyclers for packs and black mass, board refiners for electronics. Rebuilders and core buyers buy function, not material. They want the housing intact, the shaft turning and the part number matched, and they pay a core value that has nothing to do with the metal. The used parts market buys working items. This is the highest tier for anything that still functions, and it is the tier most sellers skip because it takes longer than a trip to the yard.

The test that routes almost everything

Before you decide where to sell, ask one question: is the value in the weight, or in something else?

If the value is weight, the yard is correct and the only optimisation is sorting and calling around.

If the value is something else, name it:

  • Precious metal inside goes to a refiner or assay-based recycler. Converters, DPFs, DOCs, boards, black mass.
  • Function goes to a rebuilder or the used parts market. Alternators, starters, transmissions, ECUs, hybrid packs, window regulators.

When the yard is genuinely right

This guide could easily overstate its case, so here is the other side.

Volume gates some buyers. Assay-based settlement needs enough material for an assay to be worth running. A single board or one filter is priced from a table, not assayed, and that is reasonable.

The mistake that destroys value fastest

Opening things.

An ECU is worth $200 to $1,500 as a working module to the reuse market, and $3 to $8 per pound as a bare board. Breaking the tamper seal or opening the case converts the first number into the second, instantly and irreversibly.

The same pattern repeats: a hybrid pack opened into modules becomes a different product with a different buyer, a converter cut open becomes loose substrate that many buyers will not touch, and a motor stripped for copper loses the used-part route entirely.

Two practical filters. Ask how they price: by part number, by assay, or by weight tells you immediately which tier you are in. And ask what they need from you: documentation, minimum quantity, collection or drop-off.

Buyer depth is the variable that changes most between markets, and it changes more than the metal price does.

Dense processing regions have specialists within reach, so the gap between the yard and the specialist is narrower in practice because the yard has competition.
