Why nobody pays gold spot for your boards

This is the first thing to settle, because it explains every price on this page.

Scrap boards genuinely contain precious metal. Recyclers cite circuit boards as holding 40 to 800 times more gold than equivalent gold ore, and the gold sits in three places: edge connectors, CPU pins, and the bond wires inside IC chips.

Now the arithmetic that disappoints people. Ceramic CPUs weigh about 18 g each and carry roughly 0.4 g of gold, so a pound holds about 25 units and near 10 g of gold. At the March 2026 spot price of about $65 a gram, that is $650 of contained metal. Buyers pay $2.90 to $4.10 a pound.

The reason is not margin. Acid, labour, safety and waste disposal consume 60 to 80 percent of theoretical value, and the remainder covers yield risk and freight. No legitimate buyer pays per gram of contained gold; they pay per pound of material against expected recovery.

So the useful question is never “how much gold is in this.” It is which buyer, at which grade, for what volume.

The gap that actually costs you money

Most yards cannot assay boards. They grade everything as generic mixed circuit board scrap.

Older boards are worth more. Boards from the 1990s and earlier carry thicker gold plating than modern equivalents, which is why vintage large-socket boards outprice current ones by several times.

A single desktop motherboard weighs 300 to 500 g and contains 0.1 to 0.3 g of gold, so think in single dollars per board, and considerably more if the CPU and RAM are sold separately.

Stripping RAM and CPUs off boards can raise the value of a lot by over 300 percent. Selling a motherboard with the processor and memory still attached leaves money on the table, and the buyer knows it.

Two sorting rules that matter more than anything else you do:

Never mix grades. A mixed load is paid at or near the bottom grade present. Putting $10 per pound motherboards in the same box as $0.15 power supply boards prices the motherboards at $0.15.

Mixed-grade shipments drop payouts by 18 to 27 percent at refiners, because they have to re-sort before assaying.

One note on CPUs: ceramic beats plastic by a wide margin. Pentium Pro, K6-2 and 386 or 486-era ceramic chips hold up to 0.5 g of gold each, while post-2010 plastic pinless CPUs average 0.1 to 0.2 g. And “pinless” does not mean low value: some high-end server CPUs use ceramic substrates without external pins.

The mistake that destroys the most value

Before any of the above: check whether the item works.

A car ECU is worth $200 to $1,500 as a working module to the reuse market. As a bare board it is $3 to $8 per pound on a unit weighing half a pound to a pound. Opening the case or breaking the tamper seal converts the first number into the second, instantly and permanently.

Choosing where to sell

Four routes, and the volume that justifies each.

Under 5 kg of mixed boards, no sorting time: a local aggregator. You will be paid near the bottom, but the alternative is spending an afternoon on material worth less than the afternoon.

Under 20 lb and rural: mail-in services are reasonable. You lose $5 to $10 against a local yard and save the trip.

Over 10 kg of identifiable high or mid-grade: a certified refiner with transparent assay reporting and prepaid shipping. This is where the $1.20 to $3.50 rates live.

Two tons or more, with audit requirements: a certified bulk recycler that provides documented chain of custody. This is the server-room decommission case, and the documentation matters as much as the price.

Never ship under 7 kg. Freight and assay overwhelm the payout.

What a refiner actually returns

Useful for setting expectations before you ship, from 2024 to 2025 spot data across twelve North American and EU recyclers.

For each $1,000 of contained value in scrap PCB:

  • High grade (server and motherboard mix): $280 to $410 net, after shipping and assay fees
  • Mid grade (network cards, GPU risers): $140 to $220
  • Low grade (consumer IoT, router boards): $45 to $85

Those figures assume dry, unbroken, sorted lots. Assay verification costs $0.15 to $0.35 per kg, usually waived for repeat shippers above 100 kg a month.

Preparation, in order

Remove steel heatsinks and plastic casings. Heatsinks drop a board from clean-green to mid-grade, which is a swing of about $0.50 a pound for no benefit.

Pull the CPUs and RAM. The single highest-return step available.

Sort by grade into separate boxes. High-grade server, motherboards, mid-grade cards, low-grade consumer, power supply boards.

Skip keyboards, mice and power supplies. They rarely move the needle, and the sorting time is better spent elsewhere.

Do not use solvents, and do not test capacitors. Neither adds value and the first adds risk. Focus on what is visible, weighable and verifiable.
