The uncomfortable answer first

You have pulled the magnets out of a few hard drives, or an old speaker, or a scrapped motor. They are astonishingly strong, they contain rare earth elements, and the internet says rare earths are strategically critical.

All of that is true. It still does not mean you can sell them for much.

The honest position is not that no market exists. It does, and there are real companies in it. The position is that you are not the customer that market was designed around.

Why valuable does not mean sellable

Three things separate the material's worth from your ability to realise it.

The rare earth share is real but partial. Rare earth elements make up roughly 29 to 32.5 percent of an NdFeB magnet by weight, chiefly neodymium, praseodymium and dysprosium. The rest is iron and boron. So you are holding perhaps a third of a small object in valuable material.

The recovery technology is not settled. Those figures are per unit, not per pound, and that is deliberate. Magnet scrap price per pound is not the way this material is usually quoted at small scale, because the value swings with grade, size and coating rather than tracking weight cleanly.

Grade matters more than people expect. NdFeB magnets run from N30 to N52, with higher numbers indicating stronger material and more rare earth content. An N52 typically costs 20 to 30 percent more than an N35 of the same size.

Coatings work against you. Nickel, zinc and epoxy finishes are standard on these magnets and they complicate recovery, which is reflected in what a processor will pay.

Who actually buys

This is where the strategy behind this page had to be corrected, because a flat claim that nobody buys would be wrong.

Rare earth recycling companies do exist and operate at scale. Commercial-scale recovery that works on mixed end-of-life feedstock rather than clean factory scrap. The 85 percent recovery result is a step, not an arrival.

Collection infrastructure that aggregates household quantities, which currently barely exists outside a few facilities.

And sustained supply pressure. Given the concentration of primary production, policy shifts move this market faster than technology does.
