What bus bar is

Bus bar is rectangular or round copper bar, often a quarter inch thick or more, bolted into electrical distribution equipment to carry current between breakers and feeds. It is heavy, dense and unalloyed, which makes it some of the best copper a scrapper handles.

The ReMA code for clean heavy copper is Candy, which covers bar alongside clippings and heavy wire. Bare bus bar qualifies.

Bare or plated: the check that matters

Much bus bar is tin-plated for corrosion resistance and better contact at the joints. Plated bar looks silver rather than copper-coloured, and it grades as tinned copper, a step below number 1.

Some bar is silver-plated at the contact faces, which is a different matter: the silver has value, and a specialist buyer may pay for it separately. Ask before selling silver-plated bar as ordinary tinned copper.

Bare copper-coloured bar with no coating grades as number 1, and if it is bright and unmarked some yards will pay bare bright for it.

A file across an edge tells you. Copper colour under the file means bare; silver under the file means plated through.

Preparing bus bar

Remove every bolt. Bar arrives with steel bolts through the holes. Left in, they push a lot toward irony. Back them out or cut them off.

Cut off lugs and terminals. Crimped or bolted terminals are often a different alloy.

Separate plated from bare. One plated bar in a bundle of bare bar costs the bundle a grade.

Check for silver contacts. Bright silver faces at joint points may be worth a separate sale.

Keep insulating sleeves off. Some bar carries heat-shrink or PVC sleeving. Slit it off; it is fast.
