Indicative dealer prices for clean, sorted scrap. Global reference is the US board in US dollars; the Egypt figure applies the exchange rate (1 USD = 52.25 EGP) and a local market factor of 0.85.
Yards quote in Egyptian pounds per kilogram. Prices here are derived from the exchange settlement, converted to pounds, and adjusted by a market factor of 0.85, the lowest we publish for a market with real industrial demand. That is a deliberate assessment rather than a reflection of weak consumption: where scrap cannot freely leave, domestic buyers do not have to match the international price to secure it. The factor is published on the editorial policy page and is open to challenge.

Copper scrap prices by grade in Egypt
Copper is not one price. Yards grade it by cleanliness, coating and gauge, and the spread from the top grade to the bottom runs 25 to 35 percent. These are the same grades used on export contracts, converted to EGP.
The scrap market in Egypt
Most countries covered on this site control what scrap comes in. Egypt is the first that controls what goes out, and that changes the arithmetic for everyone holding metal here.
The instrument has been used more than once. On 30 March 2022 the Ministry of Trade and Industry adopted Decree 190 of 2022, imposing a temporary six-month export ban on certain scrap and raw materials including copper, lead, stainless steel and iron. A decade earlier, ministerial decree 696 of 9 September 2012 amended export duty on several kinds of metal ore and scrap including copper, lead, ferrous waste and aluminium waste.
The reason is downstream. Egypt runs one of the most protective steel policies anywhere, and the mills need feedstock. Ezz Steel is the largest producer in Egypt and across the MENA region with seven million tonnes of annual rolling capacity. Suez Steel and Beshay Steel run 2.2 million tonnes each, and Egyptian Steel 1.5 million. Of those, Egyptian Steel is the one that operates on scrap rather than direct reduced iron.

The most valuable scrap by weight in Egypt today: Copper at E£562.97 per kg, Brass at E£342.68 per kg, Radiator at E£324.08 per kg, Wire at E£272.18 per kg, Cable at E£181.13 per kg.
What scrap metal pays per kg in Egypt
Buyers in Egypt work in EGP and price by the kilogram. Typical ranges are Copper: E£ 495 to E£ 630 per kg; Brass: E£ 300 to E£ 385 per kg; Aluminium: E£ 70 to E£ 89 per kg; Zinc: E£ 78 to E£ 99 per kg; Lead: E£ 51 to E£ 65 per kg; Stainless steel: E£ 49 to E£ 63 per kg. Across common non-ferrous grades that puts most material between E£ 49 and E£ 630 per kg, with copper at the top of the range and stainless steel near the bottom.
These are ranges rather than quotes. The band reflects day-to-day movement in the metal market and the spread between one yard and another, which our own research has found can reach 40 percent or more for the same metal in the same city. The midpoint is derived from the international exchange settlement converted to EGP and adjusted by our published market factor of 0.85. Expect a local buyer to sit toward the lower end, because they carry collection, sorting, processing and their own margin. Always confirm the rate per kilo for your specific grade before anything is weighed.
- Copper: E£ 495 to E£ 630 per kg
- Brass: E£ 300 to E£ 385 per kg
- Aluminium: E£ 70 to E£ 89 per kg
- Zinc: E£ 78 to E£ 99 per kg
- Lead: E£ 51 to E£ 65 per kg
- Stainless steel: E£ 49 to E£ 63 per kg
The two prices in the Egyptian market, and the gap between them
Egyptian scrap has a two-tier structure that is openly published, and understanding it is worth more than anything else on this page if you are selling domestically.
The tajer is the dealer. Dealers generally take quantities of not less than 100 kilos. The sareeh is the person who moves around on a three-wheeler or a small vehicle buying scrap from individuals in limited quantities, then resells to the larger dealers.
Both publish rates, and the difference is substantial.
What that gap is actually paying for
On copper the difference runs to well over a hundred pounds a kilo, which is roughly a fifth to a quarter of the value. It is not a trick. The sareeh comes to you, takes small quantities, carries the transport cost and the risk of an unsold load, and is paid for doing so.
So the choice is a real one rather than an obvious one. If you have a few kilos and no way to move them, the sareeh is the service you are buying and the price reflects it. If you can accumulate to 100 kilos and get them to a dealer, the same metal is worth materially more.
On a hundred kilos of copper, that gap is the difference between a good week and an ordinary one. It is worth doing the arithmetic before you sell rather than after.
Other things that move an Egyptian price
Whether the material is sorted or mixed, and the condition of the iron, both change what a dealer will offer for the same weight.
There is no official unified daily price for copper in Egypt. Rates differ between dealers and between governorates, and they move with the global copper price and with the pound against the dollar. Anyone quoting you a single national figure is quoting an estimate.
Sheet metal and vehicle scrap sit at the lower end, at roughly 9 and 8 pounds a kilo respectively in 2026 quotations, which is a useful reminder that ferrous value comes from weight rather than rate.
- Iron: around 20 to 22 pounds a kilo from a tajer for quantities over 100 kilos, against roughly 17 to 18 pounds from a sareeh.
- Copper: around 530 to 550 pounds a kilo from a tajer, against roughly 400 to 450 pounds from a sareeh.
What the rest of the board pays, in pounds per kilo
Copper gets the attention, but most Egyptian sellers are holding something else. Figures quoted across Egyptian price guides in 2026 give a usable picture of the rest of the market, by the kilo and by the tonne.
Red copper and yellow copper are not the same thing
Egyptian dealers price nahas ahmar and nahas asfar separately, and the distinction is worth understanding before you sell. Red copper is the pure metal. Yellow copper is an alloy of copper with zinc added, which gives it greater hardness and good corrosion resistance but lower conductivity than the pure metal.
The practical consequence is that a load described simply as copper will be priced at whichever category the buyer assigns it to. Knowing which you have is the difference between accepting a number and checking one.
Prices differ by governorate
Egyptian price guides publish figures by governorate as well as by metal, because the two do not move together. Transport cost and the distance to a mill or a processor change what a local buyer can offer, and Egyptian coverage cites transport and energy costs alongside international metal prices as the drivers of day-to-day movement.
If you are close to a governorate boundary, it is worth asking on both sides of it.
The robabikia and the 100 kilo line
The itinerant buyer calling through residential streets is part of Egyptian daily life, and the robabikia is where most household metal enters the chain. That is the sareeh described elsewhere on this page: someone working a tricycle or small car, buying limited quantities from individuals and reselling to the larger dealers.
The dividing line is quantity. A tajer generally takes loads of not less than 100 kilos. Below that you are selling to the layer that comes to you, and paying for the convenience in the rate. Above it you can approach the layer that sells to mills.
For most households the sareeh is the right answer and the price difference is the cost of not owning a truck. For a workshop, a building site or anyone clearing a property, accumulating past 100 kilos changes which market you are in.
- Sagh, sheet metal: from around 9 pounds a kilo, with the tonne from about 10,000 pounds.
- Car scrap: around 8 pounds a kilo, with the tonne around 9,000 pounds.
- Heavy iron, meaning rebar, pipes and beams: the main ferrous category Egyptian dealers quote separately.
- Stainless: quoted by the kilo and varying widely by grade.
- Cardboard: from around 5 pounds a kilo, tonne from about 6,000 pounds.
- Worn rubber: around 1.5 pounds a kilo, tonne around 1,700 pounds.
Selling scrap metal in Egypt: rules, ID and payment
For a domestic seller the rules are ordinary. Sort your metal, agree a price per kilogram before weighing, and deal with an established yard. The restrictions that shape this market operate above you, between the yard and the border, and their effect reaches you as a price rather than as a procedure.
For anyone planning to export from Egypt, the position is that scrap export has been subject to both duties and outright temporary bans, and the policy has been used reactively when domestic supply tightened. Treat the current position as something to verify with a customs broker before committing, not as a settled fact. A measure described as temporary in 2022 is a precedent as much as a historical event.
The wider trade policy explains the intent. Following investigations concluded in April 2026, restrictions now apply to almost all steel imports including semi-finished products. Billets carry a 13 percent duty subject to a minimum of 65 dollars a tonne, with an annual tariff quota of 176,700 tonnes. Hot rolled coil carries 13.6 percent with a 75.25 dollar minimum, cold rolled coil 13.7 percent, hot-dip galvanised 14 percent and pre-painted 14.5 percent. Those rates hold until 13 September 2026, after which a gradual reduction of around half a percent to one percent a year is planned, with the protective framework running to mid-September 2028. Anti-dumping duties apply to rebar and wire rod separately.
Before you sell
- If you are selling domestically, treat this as an ordinary transaction. Sort, weigh, and compare two or three yards.
- If you are planning to export, verify the current position on scrap export duties and bans with a customs broker before you commit to anything.
- Do not treat a temporary measure as expired policy. Egypt has used export restrictions on scrap more than once.
- Understand why your price looks low against international references. It is the export restriction, not a shortage of demand.
- For ferrous, know which mills run on scrap and which on direct reduced iron. It affects who actually competes for your material.

Egypt scrap price FAQ
Can you export scrap metal from Egypt?
It has been restricted more than once. Decree 190 of 2022, adopted on 30 March 2022, imposed a temporary six-month export ban on certain scrap and raw materials including copper, lead, stainless steel and iron. Export duties on metal scrap were amended by ministerial decree 696 in September 2012. Verify the current position before committing.
Why are Egyptian scrap prices low against international references?
Because the metal cannot freely leave. Where export is restricted, domestic buyers are not bidding against the world market, so they do not have to match it. That is the intended effect of the policy and it falls on the seller.
Which Egyptian mills run on scrap?
Egyptian Steel, with 1.5 million tonnes of capacity, operates using scrap steel. Ezz Steel, Suez Steel and Beshay Steel use direct reduced iron in electric arc furnaces, partly produced in house and partly imported.
How large is the Egyptian steel industry?
Ezz Steel is the largest producer in Egypt and across the MENA region with seven million tonnes of annual rolling capacity, comprising 2.3 million tonnes of hot rolled coil and 4.7 million tonnes of long products. Suez Steel and Beshay Steel have 2.2 million tonnes each.
What duties apply to steel imports into Egypt?
Following investigations concluded in April 2026, billets carry 13 percent subject to a 65 dollar per tonne minimum with an annual quota of 176,700 tonnes, hot rolled coil 13.6 percent with a 75.25 dollar minimum, cold rolled coil 13.7 percent, hot-dip galvanised 14 percent and pre-painted 14.5 percent.
How long do the steel safeguards last?
The rates hold until 13 September 2026, after which a gradual reduction of roughly 0.5 to 1 percent a year is planned over two years, with the protective framework running until mid-September 2028. Anti-dumping duties on rebar and wire rod sit separately.
What is the legal basis for these measures?
Law No. 161 of 1998 on the protection of the Egyptian economy from the adverse effects of harmful practices in international trade, together with its executive regulations.
Does any of this affect a domestic sale?
Only through the price. The restrictions operate between the yard and the border. For a household, workshop or contractor sale, the practical rules are the ordinary ones: sort, agree a price per kilogram before weighing, and compare buyers.
Is Egyptian steel production efficient?
In parts, yes. Suez Steel reduced specific natural gas consumption in its direct reduction module from 2.4 to 2.2 gigacalories, reported as the best result in the world, with electricity consumption 15 percent below the global average. Egyptian Steel introduced continuous conveyor charging of preheated scrap into its electric arc furnace, cutting rebar energy use by 15 to 20 percent.
How does Egypt compare with other markets on this site?
It is the mirror image. China, India, Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand all control what comes in. Egypt controls what goes out, which is why its domestic prices behave differently from markets of similar industrial size.
Sources and methodology
Prices on this page start from the global reference board (US dollars per pound or per ton), are multiplied by a Egypt market factor of 0.85 that reflects local demand, freight and trade rules, and are converted to EGP at 1 USD = 52.25 and to metric units (kilograms and tonnes). The board refreshes daily, with the time of the latest update shown at the top of the page.
