Copper scrap prices by grade in Bangladesh
Copper is not one price. Yards grade it by cleanliness, coating and gauge, and the spread from the top grade to the bottom runs 25 to 35 percent. These are the same grades used on export contracts, converted to BDT.
The scrap market in Bangladesh
Bangladesh's scrap market has two engines: the ship-recycling yards at Sitakunda near Chattogram, which supply heavy steel plate to re-rolling mills, and imports of ferrous scrap for the large electric arc furnace mills that make the country's rebar. Both keep ferrous scrap in strong demand, and imported scrap sets the benchmark price.
Non-ferrous scrap such as copper wire, brass and aluminium is collected through Dhaka's Dholaikhal and Narayanganj markets and Chattogram, priced off international quotes converted to taka. Prices move with the exchange rate and with letter-of-credit costs for importers.

What scrap metal pays per kg in Bangladesh
Buyers in Bangladesh work in BDT and price by the kilogram. Expect a local buyer to sit toward the lower end, because they carry collection, sorting, processing and their own margin. Where Bangladeshi steel actually comes from
Most ferrous scrap in Bangladesh does not come from demolition or from households. It comes off ships. The yards run along an 18 kilometre tidal beach concentrated in Sitakunda Upazila, roughly 20 kilometres north-west of Chattogram city around Faujdarhat, and they supply the steel that feeds the country's re-rolling mills.
The industry began there in 1974, when Karnafully Metal Works acquired the wreck of the damaged Pakistani vessel Al Abbas, beached at Fauzdarhat, and broke it for scrap. It expanded through the 1980s, and between 2004 and 2008 Bangladesh was the largest shipbreaking destination in the world before Alang in India reclaimed first place. It remains in the top three alongside Alang and Gadani in Pakistan.
That matters to a domestic seller because it sets the baseline. When ship arrivals fall, mill demand for other ferrous sources rises, and when they are strong, they do not. Watching beaching numbers is a more direct indicator of the Bangladeshi ferrous market than watching the international price.
The Hong Kong Convention, and what certification has not fixed
The Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships came into force on 26 June, and its effect on market share has been immediate. Bangladesh has around 14 green yards. India has roughly 110 compliant yards, and has tightened oversight at Alang and pushed rapid upgrades to convention standards, which has given shipowners confidence to recycle there.
The numbers show the shift. In the first quarter of 2025 Bangladesh beached 24 ships against 21 in India and three in Pakistan. In the second quarter Bangladesh slipped to 22, India held at 21, and Pakistan edged to four. Ship brokers have noted India benefiting from a stronger domestic steel market and currency stability, which allows higher bids.
Certification has not settled the safety question. On 14 August, nine workers died after exposure to toxic gas inside the LNG carrier MT RASI at Ferdous Steel in Chattogram, among them a 17-year-old. The yard was certified as compliant with the Hong Kong Convention. One month before the accident, the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments had taken legal action against Ferdous Steel following repeated occupational safety failures, and it has filed three such cases since June 2025, including against two other green-certified yards.
A deputy inspector general of DIFE Chattogram described the pattern directly: many green-certified yards fail to maintain safety protocols on the ground, and when inspections identify irregularities, notices are issued and legal action follows if nothing improves. Coverage in Bangladesh has put it more bluntly, as green on paper and deadly on the ground.
