Copper scrap prices by grade in Spain
Copper is not one price. Yards grade it by cleanliness, coating and gauge, and the spread from the top grade to the bottom runs 25 to 35 percent. These are the same grades used on export contracts, converted to EUR.
The scrap market in Spain
Spain's electric steel mills in the Basque Country and along the Mediterranean, together with a major stainless steel producer, make the country a net importer of ferrous scrap and a steady buyer of stainless and non-ferrous grades. The midpoint is derived from the international exchange settlement converted to EUR and adjusted by our published market factor of 1.00. Expect a local buyer to sit toward the lower end, because they carry collection, sorting, processing and their own margin. Where the stolen cable ends up
Spanish authorities have been unusually specific about the destination. The Interior Ministry reported that thieves had stolen more than 65,000 metres of copper cable across the country, and that it was transported to scrap depots in Madrid.
That is the part of the chain most reporting leaves out. Authorities and market specialists say stolen copper is hard to trace because it is cut into smaller pieces and sent to scrap merchants, after which it becomes effectively untraceable. Cutting is what destroys the evidence, and the yard is where cutting happens.
The disruption is real and public. Commuter services in Catalonia have been forced to halt circulation on several lines because of copper cable theft from an installation in the region, leaving passengers massed at the platform entrances at Barcelona Sants.
For a legitimate Spanish dealer the implication is uncomfortable but clear: Madrid depots have been named by the Interior Ministry as the destination, so the sector carries that association whether or not any individual yard deserves it. Recording provenance is how a business separates itself from the description.
