Copper scrap prices by grade in Portugal
Copper is not one price. Yards grade it by cleanliness, coating and gauge, and the spread from the top grade to the bottom runs 25 to 35 percent. These are the same grades used on export contracts, converted to EUR.
The scrap market in Portugal
Portuguese yards around Lisbon publish weekly price tables with the previous figure, the new figure and the direction of movement marked for every grade, which gives an unusually clear view of how fast this market moves. One Almada yard showed copper novo rising from 9.70 to 10.15 euros a kilo and brass reaching 5.15 in a single week in July 2026.
The detail worth planning around is collection. The same price lists show a specific, lower rate for iron collected by the yard's own vehicle: roughly 0.12 to 0.13 euros a kilo for a company pickup against 0.17 to 0.18 for material delivered to the yard yourself, with an even lower rate quoted for collections under 500 kilos. The gap is modest in cash terms on iron, but it is the clearest published instance on this site of a yard pricing its own transport into the rate rather than treating collection as free.
Portugal is also a genuine copper producer, the seventh largest in the world by mined output and second in Europe, which is relevant context for a seller: this is not a market that depends entirely on imported ore, and domestic smelting and processing capacity sits behind the local scrap trade.

The most valuable scrap by weight in Portugal today: Copper at EUR 10.50 per kg, Brass at EUR 6.43 per kg, Radiator at EUR 6.03 per kg, Wire at EUR 5.07 per kg, Cable at EUR 3.37 per kg.
Scrap metal rates in Portugal, by grade
Rates in Portugal are quoted per kilogram in EUR. Typical ranges are Copper: EUR 9 to EUR 12 per kg; Brass: EUR 5.7 to EUR 7.2 per kg; Aluminium: EUR 1.3 to EUR 1.6 per kg; Zinc: EUR 1.5 to EUR 1.9 per kg; Lead: EUR 1.0 to EUR 1.2 per kg; Stainless steel: EUR 0.9 to EUR 1.2 per kg. Across common non-ferrous grades that puts most material between EUR 0.9 and EUR 12 per kg, with copper at the top of the range and stainless steel near the bottom.
These are ranges rather than quotes. The band reflects day-to-day movement in the metal market and the spread between one yard and another, which our own research has found can reach 40 percent or more for the same metal in the same city. The midpoint is derived from the international exchange settlement converted to EUR and adjusted by our published market factor of 0.96. Expect a local buyer to sit toward the lower end, because they carry collection, sorting, processing and their own margin. Always confirm the rate per kilo for your specific grade before anything is weighed.
- Copper: EUR 9 to EUR 12 per kg
- Brass: EUR 5.7 to EUR 7.2 per kg
- Aluminium: EUR 1.3 to EUR 1.6 per kg
- Zinc: EUR 1.5 to EUR 1.9 per kg
- Lead: EUR 1.0 to EUR 1.2 per kg
- Stainless steel: EUR 0.9 to EUR 1.2 per kg
Selling scrap metal in Portugal: rules, ID and payment
As an EU member state, Portugal's scrap trade operates under Regulation (EC) No. 1013/2006, the Waste Shipment Regulation, with sorted clean metal scrap classified as green-listed waste that can move within the EU with comparatively light paperwork, rather than under a national export licence regime.
The grade distinctions on a Portuguese list are specific and worth learning before you sell. Cobre novo, new copper, and cobre velho, old copper, are quoted separately and roughly a euro apart at the same yard. Cabo de cobre, copper cable, is priced lower again, and cabo de cobre sujo, dirty cable, lower still, reflecting an estimated net yield rather than the clean metal rate.
Radiators are their own category rather than scored as mixed copper: radiadores latao/cobre, brass-copper radiators, and radiadores aluminio/cobre, aluminium-copper radiators, are listed and priced separately because the metal mix differs.
Iron and steel in Portugal pay far less than non-ferrous, commonly in the range of 0.06 to 0.24 euros a kilo depending on whether the material is light mixed scrap, heavy structural iron or stainless, which moves at several times the ordinary iron rate.
Before you sell
- Deliver it yourself if you can. Several Portuguese yards pay a lower rate for company-collected iron than for material you bring in.
- Separate cobre novo from cobre velho. The published gap between new and old copper runs to roughly a euro a kilo at the same yard.
- Strip cable where the volume justifies it. Cabo de cobre pays a fraction of clean copper, and cabo de cobre sujo less again.
- Keep radiators sorted by type. Brass-copper and aluminium-copper radiators are priced as separate categories, not as one mixed grade.
- Check the date on the price table. Weekly updates mean a list from last month is not a reliable quote.
- Ask the collection threshold if you cannot deliver. Pickups under roughly 500 kilos commonly carry a different rate again.

Portugal scrap price FAQ
Qual o preco da sucata de ferro em Portugal hoje?
Published Lisbon area price tables in 2026 showed plain iron around 0.17 to 0.18 euros a kilo delivered to the yard, with lighter mixed iron closer to 0.15 and stainless several times the ordinary iron rate. Rates move with the international market, so check the date on any list before relying on it.
Why does delivering it myself pay more?
Because several Portuguese yards price their own collection vehicle into the rate. Published lists show roughly 0.12 to 0.13 euros a kilo for company-collected iron against 0.17 to 0.18 for material you bring in, with a further reduction for collections under about 500 kilos.
What is the difference between cobre novo and cobre velho?
New and old copper, quoted separately. In July 2026 one Lisbon area yard listed cobre novo at 10.15 euros a kilo against cobre velho at 8.54, a gap of over a euro for the same metal in a different condition.
How much less is cable worth than clean copper?
Substantially less. The same price table listed cabo de cobre, copper cable, at 1.66 euros a kilo and cabo de cobre sujo, dirty cable, at 0.50, against cobre novo at 10.15, because cable is paid on an estimated net copper yield rather than the clean metal rate.
Are aluminium and brass radiators priced the same?
No. Radiadores latao/cobre, brass-copper radiators, and radiadores aluminio/cobre, aluminium-copper radiators, are listed as separate categories because the metal composition differs, and the prices differ with it.
How often do Portuguese scrap prices change?
At several major yards, weekly, with the previous and new figures both shown so the direction of movement is visible. That is unusually transparent next to most markets, where you only see the current figure.
Is there an export restriction on Portuguese scrap?
No national one. Portugal trades within the EU single market under the Waste Shipment Regulation, and most sorted clean metal scrap is classified as green-listed, which moves between EU member states with comparatively light paperwork.
Does Portugal produce its own copper?
Yes, meaningfully. It is the seventh largest copper producer in the world and second in Europe by mined output, which means the scrap trade sits alongside real domestic processing capacity rather than depending entirely on imported ore.
What should I separate before selling?
Copper by condition, new from old; cable from clean wire; radiators by metal type; and stainless from ordinary iron. Each distinction is worth a different line on a Portuguese price table and a different rate.
What is the Waste Shipment Regulation and why does it matter here?
EU Regulation 1013/2006 governs how waste, including scrap metal, moves between member states. Sorted clean metal is green-listed under it, which is the structural reason Portuguese and other EU scrap markets trade close to the international reference rather than at the discount seen in markets with national export restrictions.
