Indicative dealer prices for clean, sorted scrap. Global reference is the US board in US dollars; the Bahrain figure applies the exchange rate (1 USD = 0.38 BHD) and a local market factor of 0.94.
Yards quote in Bahraini dinars per kilogram, and the dinar is a high-value currency, so figures per kilo look small next to other markets. Prices here are derived from the exchange settlement, converted to dinars, and adjusted by a market factor of 0.94, our assessment of a small but industrially sophisticated market where scrap moves largely on contract and export routes remain open. The factor is published on the editorial policy page and is open to challenge.

Copper scrap prices by grade in Bahrain
Copper is not one price. Yards grade it by cleanliness, coating and gauge, and the spread from the top grade to the bottom runs 25 to 35 percent. These are the same grades used on export contracts, converted to BHD.
The scrap market in Bahrain
Every other Gulf state on this site controls scrap at the border. Saudi Arabia restricts steel exports, Kuwait restricts copper, the UAE has banned and taxed and banned again, Qatar signed a monitoring agreement with its customs authority, and Oman prohibits the export of any waste at all. Bahrain took the opposite approach and regulated the generator instead.
The Executive Regulations of Law No. 18 of 2023 on Waste Management, issued by the Supreme Council for Environment, require facilities that generate waste, construction projects explicitly included, to segregate, store and recycle specified materials including metals, with proper licensing and compliance with national standards.
That is a meaningful difference. An export restriction changes who may buy your material. A generator obligation changes whether the material reaches the market as scrap at all, because a construction site that must separate its metal is a construction site producing sorted feedstock rather than mixed rubble.
The industrial context explains why metals get this attention. Bahrain produces more than 2 percent of the world's aluminium. Alba, Aluminium Bahrain, has annual capacity above 1.548 million tonnes and is the largest smelter outside China, having started in 1971 at 120,000 tonnes a year. SULB produces medium and heavy beams and structural sections, and Bahrain Ferro Alloys makes ferromanganese and silicomanganese for steelmaking.

The most valuable scrap by weight in Bahrain today: Copper at BD 4.504 per kg, Brass at BD 2.727 per kg, Radiator at BD 2.587 per kg, Wire at BD 2.174 per kg, Cable at BD 1.449 per kg.
What scrap metal pays per kg in Bahrain
Buyers in Bahrain work in BHD and price by the kilogram. Typical ranges are Copper: BD 4.0 to BD 5.0 per kg; Brass: BD 2.4 to BD 3.1 per kg; Aluminium: BD 0.6 to BD 0.7 per kg; Zinc: BD 0.6 to BD 0.8 per kg; Lead: BD 0.4 to BD 0.5 per kg; Stainless steel: BD 0.4 to BD 0.5 per kg. Across common non-ferrous grades that puts most material between BD 0.4 and BD 5 per kg, with copper at the top of the range and stainless steel near the bottom.
These are ranges rather than quotes. The band reflects day-to-day movement in the metal market and the spread between one yard and another, which our own research has found can reach 40 percent or more for the same metal in the same city. The midpoint is derived from the international exchange settlement converted to BHD and adjusted by our published market factor of 0.94. Expect a local buyer to sit toward the lower end, because they carry collection, sorting, processing and their own margin. Always confirm the rate per kilo for your specific grade before anything is weighed.
- Copper: BD 4.0 to BD 5.0 per kg
- Brass: BD 2.4 to BD 3.1 per kg
- Aluminium: BD 0.6 to BD 0.7 per kg
- Zinc: BD 0.6 to BD 0.8 per kg
- Lead: BD 0.4 to BD 0.5 per kg
- Stainless steel: BD 0.4 to BD 0.5 per kg
Selling scrap metal in Bahrain: rules, ID and payment
The Supreme Council for Environment is the apex regulator, administering Decree-Law No. 21 of 1996 concerning the Environment. For an operator its requirements work through three instruments: environmental impact assessments for new or modified projects, environmental permits for ongoing operations, and periodic monitoring returns.
If you generate metal waste from a construction or industrial project, segregation is not a commercial choice here. It is a licensed obligation under the 2023 waste management law and its executive regulations.
The trade itself runs on contracts rather than counter sales to an unusual degree. Bahraini scrap companies advertise scrap removal agreements with the major industrial and utility employers, which tells you how the material actually moves: from a named plant to a named contractor, not from a householder to a weighbridge.
Before you sell
- If you run a site, budget for segregation from the start. It is a legal requirement, not an efficiency measure.
- Check that your contractor holds the relevant environmental permit and licensing before they remove anything.
- Separate aluminium carefully. In a country built around one of the world's largest smelters, the aluminium stream is the one with the most sophisticated buyers.
- For industrial volumes, approach contractors who already hold removal agreements with the large employers rather than working through general traders.
- Compare against UAE and Saudi buyers. Bahrain is a small market and its competitive set is regional.

Bahrain scrap price FAQ
Does Bahrain restrict scrap exports?
Not in the way its neighbours do. Bahrain regulates the generation and handling of waste rather than its departure, which is the opposite approach to Oman's blanket export ban or Kuwait's copper restriction.
What does Law No. 18 of 2023 require?
Its Executive Regulations, issued by the Supreme Council for Environment, require facilities that generate waste, including construction projects, to segregate, store and recycle specified materials such as metals, with proper licensing and compliance with national standards.
Who regulates this?
The Supreme Council for Environment, which administers Decree-Law No. 21 of 1996 concerning the Environment. For operators it works through environmental impact assessments, environmental permits and periodic monitoring returns.
Why does Bahrain care so much about metals?
Because metals are the industrial base. Bahrain produces more than 2 percent of the world's aluminium, hosts Alba with capacity above 1.548 million tonnes a year, and also produces structural steel and ferroalloys for steelmaking.
How does scrap actually move here?
Largely on contract. Bahraini scrap companies advertise removal agreements with the major industrial and utility employers, so material typically travels from a named plant to a named contractor rather than arriving at a counter.
Why do prices per kilo look so low?
The dinar is a high-value currency. Compare in dollars per tonne when checking against an international reference, because a figure that looks small beside dirhams or riyals may be the same money.
Is Bahrain a better or worse market to sell into?
On price it is generally closer to the international reference than its neighbours, because the export route has not been closed. On process it is more demanding, because segregation is a legal obligation for generators rather than a choice.
What should a construction project do?
Plan segregation into the site setup rather than treating it as a disposal decision at the end, and confirm that whoever removes the material holds the relevant permits. The obligation sits on the generator, which means it sits on you.
How does the Strait of Hormuz affect Bahrain?
It is the shipping corridor for the region, and disruption there has affected Gulf metals operations including raw material logistics. For anyone contracting on long lead times from this market, route risk is worth pricing in explicitly.
Should I compare Bahraini offers against other Gulf markets?
Yes. Bahrain is small and its buyers compete regionally, so UAE and Saudi pricing is the realistic benchmark rather than the international index alone.
Sources and methodology
Prices on this page start from the global reference board (US dollars per pound or per ton), are multiplied by a Bahrain market factor of 0.94 that reflects local demand, freight and trade rules, and are converted to BHD at 1 USD = 0.38 and to metric units (kilograms and tonnes).
