Indicative dealer prices for clean, sorted scrap. Global reference is the US board in US dollars; the Qatar figure applies the exchange rate (1 USD = 3.64 QAR) and a local market factor of 0.93.
Yards quote in Qatari riyals per kilogram. Prices here are derived from the exchange settlement, converted to riyals, and adjusted by a market factor of 0.93, our assessment of a market where export routes are being narrowed deliberately and domestic mill demand sets the floor. The factor is published on the editorial policy page and is open to challenge.

Copper scrap prices by grade in Qatar
Copper is not one price. Yards grade it by cleanliness, coating and gauge, and the spread from the top grade to the bottom runs 25 to 35 percent. These are the same grades used on export contracts, converted to QAR.
The scrap market in Qatar
In October, Qatar Steel signed a memorandum of understanding with Qatar's General Authority of Customs, formalising a partnership to monitor and restrict scrap shipments leaving the country. That is an unusual arrangement and it tells you what the concern is: scrap availability across the Gulf, in a region where electric arc furnace capacity is expanding faster than the material to feed it.
Qatar Steel operates one of the region's largest direct reduced iron complexes, with annual capacity of around 2.35 million tonnes of DRI and hot briquetted iron, 2.57 million tonnes of billets and 1.8 million tonnes of rebar. It restarted a fourth electric arc furnace unit, adding 750,000 tonnes a year of billet capacity, which is precisely the kind of addition that makes a domestic scrap supply worth protecting.
For a seller inside Qatar that is broadly good news. A mill expanding melting capacity in a country that is discouraging exports has to buy locally.

What scrap metal pays per kg in Qatar
Buyers in Qatar work in QAR and price by the kilogram. Typical ranges are Copper: QR 38 to QR 48 per kg; Brass: QR 23 to QR 29 per kg; Aluminium: QR 5.3 to QR 6.8 per kg; Zinc: QR 5.9 to QR 7.5 per kg; Lead: QR 3.9 to QR 4.9 per kg; Stainless steel: QR 3.7 to QR 4.8 per kg. Across common non-ferrous grades that puts most material between QR 3.7 and QR 48 per kg, with copper at the top of the range and stainless steel near the bottom.
These are ranges rather than quotes. The band reflects day-to-day movement in the metal market and the spread between one yard and another, which our own research has found can reach 40 percent or more for the same metal in the same city. The midpoint is derived from the international exchange settlement converted to QAR and adjusted by our published market factor of 0.93. Expect a local buyer to sit toward the lower end, because they carry collection, sorting, processing and their own margin. Always confirm the rate per kilo for your specific grade before anything is weighed.
- Copper: QR 38 to QR 48 per kg
- Brass: QR 23 to QR 29 per kg
- Aluminium: QR 5.3 to QR 6.8 per kg
- Zinc: QR 5.9 to QR 7.5 per kg
- Lead: QR 3.9 to QR 4.9 per kg
- Stainless steel: QR 3.7 to QR 4.8 per kg
Selling scrap metal in Qatar: rules, ID and payment
The practical point for an exporter is that scrap leaving Qatar is now watched by two parties rather than one. The customs authority handles the shipment and the country's largest steelmaker has a formal role in monitoring it. Plan on that being slower and more documented than it was.
Most scrap generated here comes from construction and industrial activity rather than from households, so the trade is oriented toward contractors, demolition and plant maintenance rather than counter sales.
Qatar Steel also operates a plant in the UAE producing wire rod and rebar, which means the group has exposure on both sides of a border where the UAE has separately restricted scrap exports. Anyone modelling Gulf scrap flows should treat those two policies as connected rather than coincidental.
Before you sell
- If you are exporting, budget more time for documentation than the route historically required.
- Separate ferrous from non-ferrous before quoting. Mill demand here is ferrous-led.
- For construction and demolition volumes, approach buyers who serve the mills directly rather than intermediaries.
- Watch GCC policy as a bloc. When one member restricts exports, the others tend to follow within months.

Qatar scrap price FAQ
What did Qatar Steel agree with the customs authority?
A memorandum of understanding signed in October, formalising a partnership with the General Authority of Customs to monitor and restrict scrap shipments leaving Qatar. It followed concerns over scrap availability across the Gulf as electric arc furnace capacity expands.
How big is Qatar Steel?
Annual capacity of around 2.35 million tonnes of DRI and hot briquetted iron, 2.57 million tonnes of billets and 1.8 million tonnes of rebar, making it one of the region's largest DRI-based complexes and a key GCC supplier of DRI.
Does that mean I cannot export scrap from Qatar?
It means shipments are monitored and can be restricted, not that export is prohibited outright. Treat the process as slower and more documented than it was, and confirm the current position before contracting.
Is this good or bad for a seller in Qatar?
Broadly good. A mill that has just restarted a fourth furnace in a country discouraging exports has to buy domestically, which supports reliable demand even if it caps the ceiling on price.
Where does Qatari scrap come from?
Largely construction, demolition, industrial plant and maintenance rather than households, so the trade is oriented toward contractors and site clearances rather than counter sales.
Is this connected to the UAE export ban?
They are separate measures but they point the same way, and Qatar Steel operates a plant in the UAE as well. Anyone modelling Gulf scrap flows should read them as a regional pattern rather than as isolated national decisions.
What about the Strait of Hormuz?
Gulf scrap moving to Asian buyers passes through it, and disruption there affects both availability and price well beyond the region. It is a route risk worth pricing into any long-dated contract from this market.
How should I prepare a load?
Separate ferrous from non-ferrous, keep documentation complete, and for volume approach buyers who supply the mills directly rather than working through intermediaries.
Sources and methodology
Prices on this page start from the global reference board (US dollars per pound or per ton), are multiplied by a Qatar market factor of 0.93 that reflects local demand, freight and trade rules, and are converted to QAR at 1 USD = 3.64 and to metric units (kilograms and tonnes). The board refreshes daily, with the time of the latest update shown at the top of the page.
