Indicative dealer prices for clean, sorted scrap. Global reference is the US board in US dollars; the Sweden figure applies the exchange rate (1 USD = 10.04 SEK) and a local market factor of 1.00.
Swedish yards quote in kronor per kilogram. Prices here are derived from the exchange settlement, converted to kronor, and adjusted by a market factor of 1.00, our assessment of a formalised European market with strong domestic demand and, increasingly, new furnace capacity competing for feedstock. The factor is published on the editorial policy page and is open to challenge.

Copper scrap prices by grade in Sweden
Copper is not one price. Yards grade it by cleanliness, coating and gauge, and the spread from the top grade to the bottom runs 25 to 35 percent. These are the same grades used on export contracts, converted to SEK.
The scrap market in Sweden
Most countries on this site shape their scrap market through trade rules. Sweden is doing it through furnaces. Blast furnaces are being shut down and electric arc furnaces built in their place, and an electric arc furnace runs on scrap.
The clearest signal comes from Stegra, formerly H2 Green Steel, building the first new steel plant in Sweden in fifty years at Boden Industrial Park in Norrbotten. Reporting on the project notes that scrap metal is to be delivered there first, serving as the initial raw material for production, with iron ore introduced afterwards. A plant designed around hydrogen and green iron begins its life on recycled metal.
Alongside it, SSAB is converting. Electric arc furnace construction has begun at Lulea to replace blast furnace and basic oxygen production by the early 2030s, in a project valued at around 4.5 billion euros. At Oxelosund, electric arc furnace construction is well advanced and the blast furnaces are expected to shut down in 2027.

Scrap metal rates in Sweden, by grade
Rates in Sweden are quoted per kilogram in SEK. Typical ranges are Copper: kr 115 to kr 145 per kg; Brass: kr 68 to kr 87 per kg; Aluminium: kr 16 to kr 20 per kg; Zinc: kr 18 to kr 22 per kg; Lead: kr 11 to kr 15 per kg; Stainless steel: kr 11 to kr 14 per kg. Across common non-ferrous grades that puts most material between kr 11 and kr 145 per kg, with copper at the top of the range and stainless steel near the bottom.
These are ranges rather than quotes. The band reflects day-to-day movement in the metal market and the spread between one yard and another, which our own research has found can reach 40 percent or more for the same metal in the same city. The midpoint is derived from the international exchange settlement converted to SEK and adjusted by our published market factor of 1.00. Expect a local buyer to sit toward the lower end, because they carry collection, sorting, processing and their own margin. Always confirm the rate per kilo for your specific grade before anything is weighed.

Selling scrap metal in Sweden: rules, ID and payment
For a domestic seller in Sweden the rules are ordinary European ones. Sort your material, agree a price per kilogram before weighing, and deal with a licensed yard. There is no import gate of the kind that shapes the Asian markets on this site.
What does apply, and applies to every EU seller, is the Waste Shipment Regulation. From 21 May 2026 all shipment procedures run digitally through a central EU system. From 21 May 2027 exports of green-listed waste to non-OECD countries are only possible where the destination appears on a Commission list, and every recovery facility outside the EU, including those in OECD and EFTA countries, must hold an accredited third-party audit.
The domestic direction of travel is worth weighing against that. Sweden produced around 4 million tonnes of steel in 2024, ranking 34th globally, so it is not a large steel market by volume. But it is converting a high proportion of that capacity from ore-based to scrap-fed production in a short period, which changes who is bidding for Swedish scrap and how hard.
Before you sell
- Sort properly. A formalised market pays for grading discipline more reliably than an informal one does.
- Watch the furnace conversions rather than the trade rules. Oxelosund blast furnaces are expected to shut in 2027 and Lulea converts by the early 2030s.
- If you export outside the EU, plan for 21 May 2027. Your buyer facility will need an accredited third-party audit and you will need the documentation.
- Understand what the premium is for. SSAB Zero is made from recycled steel with fossil-free energy, so the scrap itself is part of the product claim.
- Expect competition for clean, low-residual scrap to increase as electric arc furnace capacity comes online.

Sweden scrap price FAQ
Why is Swedish scrap demand rising?
Because blast furnaces are being replaced by electric arc furnaces, and an electric arc furnace runs primarily on recycled steel. SSAB is converting at Lulea and Oxelosund, and Stegra is building an entirely new plant at Boden.
What is Stegra?
Formerly H2 Green Steel, it is building the first new steel plant in Sweden in fifty years at Boden Industrial Park in Norrbotten, using hydrogen-based direct reduced iron with an electric arc furnace. Reporting on the project notes that scrap metal is to be delivered first as the initial raw material.
How big is the Stegra project?
A 2.5 million tonne plant with capacity expected to scale toward 5 million tonnes a year by 2030, on a 270 hectare site with a nearby 700 megawatt hydrogen plant, requiring roughly 1.3 gigawatts of continuous power. Total project funding has reached around 6.5 billion euros.
When do the Swedish blast furnaces close?
SSAB expects to shut the blast furnaces at Oxelosund in 2027, with electric arc furnace construction well advanced there. At Lulea, electric arc furnaces will replace blast furnace and basic oxygen production by the early 2030s.
How much carbon does each route emit?
Blast furnace and basic oxygen production emits roughly 2.2 to 2.33 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel. Electric arc furnace production depends on the electricity source, and with renewables can fall to around 0.357 tonnes per tonne. Direct reduced iron with an electric arc furnace ranges from 0.7 to 1.2 tonnes, or up to 3 if coal is used.
What is SSAB Zero?
Steel made from recycled material using fossil-free energy. It is distinct from SSAB Fossil-Free, which uses HYBRIT hydrogen-based technology with iron ore. For a scrap seller the first is the relevant one, because the scrap is part of the product claim.
What is HYBRIT?
A joint venture of SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall developing hydrogen-based ironmaking. Its pilot plant at Lulea started in August 2020 and it made the world's first customer delivery of steel produced without coal, to Volvo. Demonstration plant trials run from 2026.
How large is Swedish steel production?
Around 4 million tonnes in 2024, ranking 34th globally against world output of about 1.84 billion tonnes. It is a small producer by volume but a significant one in specialty steels and in decarbonisation.
Do EU waste shipment rules affect Swedish sellers?
Yes, in full. All shipment procedures have run digitally through a central EU system since 21 May 2026, and from 21 May 2027 exports of green-listed waste to non-OECD countries require the destination to be on a Commission list, with every overseas recovery facility holding an accredited third-party audit.
Should I expect better prices for clean scrap in Sweden?
Over time, plausibly. A market replacing ore-based capacity with scrap-fed capacity has rising demand for clean, low-residual material, and where the scrap forms part of a low-carbon product claim, its quality matters more than it does to a conventional mill.
Sources and methodology
Prices on this page start from the global reference board (US dollars per pound or per ton), are multiplied by a Sweden market factor of 1.00 that reflects local demand, freight and trade rules, and are converted to SEK at 1 USD = 10.04 and to metric units (kilograms and tonnes). The board refreshes daily, with the time of the latest update shown at the top of the page.
