Ballast is worth knowing as a grade name, because it is obscure and it is what you may see on a ticket. It covers transformer and coil-type items where iron and encapsulation dominate the weight and the recoverable metal fraction is low.

The epoxy problem

Modern coils are built specifically to resist what you would need to do to them.
