The scrap market in Hai Phong

Hai Phong is the port for northern Vietnam, and its role in the scrap trade follows from what it handles: heavy, bulky freight that inland routes are poor at moving. The northern industrial belt around Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong and Hai Phong itself is dominated by heavy metal components, precision engineering and automotive and electronics supply chains, much of it Japanese and Korean invested. That generates a scrap stream weighted toward industrial offcut and end-of-life plant rather than household metal.

Unlike Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong has steel capacity within the city. The Viet Nhat works at Km9, Quan Toan, Hong Bang District, is a rolling operation of roughly 240,000 tonnes a year with a smaller refining capacity, and the wider northern cluster includes Hoa Phat sites in neighbouring Hai Duong and Hung Yen. Material collected here therefore has closer destinations than material collected in the south, which is the main reason northern and southern quotes diverge on the same grade.

Selling scrap metal in Hai Phong: rules, ID and payment

The domestic trade runs on ordinary business registration; there is no scrap dealer licence. If you are handling imported material rather than domestic collection, the national import rules apply in full, including the requirement that only end users with their own recycling facilities may import.

Before any sale, check the live board above, sort by grade and get quotes from two or three buyers; the best scrap price guide covers the routine and the calculator turns a weight into a figure at today's price. Hai Phong scrap price FAQ

What is the scrap copper price in Hai Phong today?

As of the latest update, the indicative price for clean number 1 copper is about ₫300,902 per kg in VND. Hai Phong yards typically quote within a few percent of that figure either side, depending on grade, volume and the buyer; the live board above shows all fifteen grades.

Does Hai Phong have its own steel capacity?

Yes. The Viet Nhat works at Km9, Quan Toan in Hong Bang District is a rolling operation of roughly 240,000 tonnes a year, and further capacity sits inland in Hai Duong and Hung Yen. That gives northern scrap closer destinations than material collected around Ho Chi Minh City.

What kind of scrap does Hai Phong generate?

Industrial rather than household. The northern belt around Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong and Hai Phong is weighted toward heavy components, precision engineering and automotive and electronics supply work, much of it Japanese and Korean invested.

Why does Hai Phong matter for imported scrap?

It is the northern sea gateway and handles heavy and bulky shipments that inland routes struggle with. Imported material for northern mills is more likely to arrive through here than to be trucked up from the south.

Are Hai Phong prices different from the national board?

The board on this page is the Vietnam indicative level, and Hai Phong yards trade around it rather than exactly on it. Local competition, freight to the nearest consumer and the day's export demand set the spread, which is why two quotes in the same city can differ by several percent on the same morning.

Sources and methodology

The Hai Phong board uses the Vietnam indicative prices: global exchange benchmarks (COMEX copper, CME aluminum and steel, NYMEX platinum and palladium, IMF monthly lead, zinc and nickel) multiplied by typical yard recovery shares, a local market factor of 0.91 and the day's exchange rate. The full method, the recovery shares and the correction policy are on our editorial policy page; local notes on this page are reviewed against published dealer information and reader corrections sent to info@scrappricetoday.com.

Prices are indicative and for information only; they are not offers to buy or sell. Yard quotes in Hai Phong vary by grade, volume, condition and buyer.
