Hanoi is a collection market rather than a processing one. Construction, renovation and a dense electronics and appliance trade feed the phe lieu network, and the material moves out to the mills in Hung Yen, Hai Duong and the wider northern corridor. The city has no furnace of its own.

The scrap market in Hanoi
Hanoi's scrap comes from what a large, rapidly rebuilding capital produces: construction and demolition steel, renovation copper and cable, appliances, and a substantial flow of electronics from repair and retail. The phe lieu collectors who buy this door to door and from small workshops are the first layer, and consolidators aggregate upward. It is a high-volume, high-turnover market in mixed material rather than a source of clean industrial offcut.
There is no electric arc furnace in Hanoi. The northern capacity that consumes this material sits in the surrounding provinces, including Hoa Phat sites at Pho Noi A in Hung Yen and in Kinh Mon District, Hai Duong. Those are short journeys by national standards, which is why northern ferrous quotes hold up better than the distance from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu My would suggest. For non-ferrous the question barely arises, since copper and aluminium travel economically regardless.

Where the scrap yards are in Hanoi
- Inner districts, where renovation and appliance material enters the collector network.
- The outer industrial districts and ring-road corridors, where consolidators operate.
- Hung Yen and Hai Duong, where the mills that consume northern ferrous are located.
What pays well in Hanoi
- Construction and demolition ferrous, consolidated for a short run to the provincial mills.
- Renovation copper and cable, which holds value through every layer of the chain.
- Electronics and appliance non-ferrous, a steady city supply.
Selling scrap metal in Hanoi: rules, ID and payment
No scrap dealer licence exists in Vietnam, so the collector network operates on ordinary business registration. The practical checks are the usual ones: separate metals before selling, agree a per-kilogram price before weighing, and deal with a buyer who has premises when the value justifies it.
Before any sale, check the live board above, sort by grade and get quotes from two or three buyers; the best scrap price guide covers the routine and the calculator turns a weight into a figure at today's price. To judge whether a local quote is competitive, our note on telling a well-paying yard from a headline rate sets out the benchmark test.
Hanoi scrap price FAQ
What is the scrap copper price in Hanoi today?
As of the latest update, the indicative price for clean number 1 copper is about ₫300,902 per kg in VND. Hanoi yards typically quote within a few percent of that figure either side, depending on grade, volume and the buyer; the live board above shows all fifteen grades.
Where does scrap collected in Hanoi go?
Out of the city. There is no electric arc furnace in Hanoi, so ferrous is consolidated and moved to northern capacity in the surrounding provinces, including Hoa Phat sites at Pho Noi A in Hung Yen and in Kinh Mon District, Hai Duong.
How does the collection trade work here?
Phe lieu collectors buy door to door and from small workshops, then sell upward to consolidators who aggregate for the mills. It is high-turnover mixed material rather than the clean industrial offcut the southern fabrication belt produces.
Are Hanoi scrap prices better or worse than Ho Chi Minh City?
On ferrous the north generally has shorter journeys to a furnace, which supports the price. On copper and aluminium the difference is slight, because non-ferrous travels economically and the destination matters less.
Are Hanoi prices different from the national board?
The board on this page is the Vietnam indicative level, and Hanoi yards trade around it rather than exactly on it. Local competition, freight to the nearest consumer and the day's export demand set the spread, which is why two quotes in the same city can differ by several percent on the same morning.
Sources and methodology
The Hanoi board uses the Vietnam indicative prices: global exchange benchmarks (COMEX copper, CME aluminum and steel, NYMEX platinum and palladium, IMF monthly lead, zinc and nickel) multiplied by typical yard recovery shares, a local market factor of 0.91 and the day's exchange rate. The full method, the recovery shares and the correction policy are on our editorial policy page; local notes on this page are reviewed against published dealer information and reader corrections sent to info@scrappricetoday.com.
Prices are indicative and for information only; they are not offers to buy or sell. Yard quotes in Hanoi vary by grade, volume, condition and buyer.
