Vendors compare models. The question that comes first is whether an analyser pays at all, and for most operations the honest answer is no. This asks that before it asks anything else.
Purchase bands are 2026 street prices: entry Si-PIN $10,000 to $15,000, mid-range SDD $15,000 to $25,000, premium above that, with a marketplace average around $24,400. Rental averages $643 a day, $2,190 a week and $5,885 a month before insured shipping, deposits and return calibration, which push a short lease toward $2,500 to $4,000 a month all in. Ownership adds a $2,000 to $4,000 annual service contract, periodic calibration and, in most jurisdictions, radiation licensing obligations.
Two decisions, in order
Does instrumentation pay? Avoided mis-grade losses and rejected loads have to clear the annual cost of ownership before the model comparison means anything. A service contract alone runs $2,000 to $4,000 a year on a machine you already own.
If it does, buy or rent? That depends almost entirely on how many months a year you would use it.
Most guides answer the second question and skip the first, which is why so many analysers sit in cabinets.
Where the crossover falls

Insured round-trip shipping adds $150 to $300, deposits run $2,000 to $5,000 on hold, and return calibration is often charged whether or not you damaged anything. Realistically a short lease lands at $2,500 to $4,000 a month all in.
Run that forward and the arithmetic settles itself: a six-month rental commonly totals $10,000 to $15,000, which buys a new factory-direct analyser outright. Above roughly three months of use a year, owning starts to win.
Below that, renting is genuinely better, and not only on price. It removes radiation licensing liability, calibration responsibility and shipping risk, which together are most of the hidden cost of ownership.
Do not pay for a detector you do not need
Si-PIN covers stainless, brass, copper and heavy metals. That is the majority of what a general yard handles, and the entry tier at $10,000 to $15,000 does it.
SDD is required for aluminium alloy sorting and precious metals. Si-PIN will not separate aluminium series reliably, so if that is your material the cheaper tier is not an option at any price.
Buying SDD for a stainless-and-brass operation is the most common overspend in this category.
What ownership actually costs
The machine is the start of it.
- Service contract or warranty extension: $2,000 to $4,000 a year
- X-ray tube replacement: every three to five years
- Annual calibration against certified reference samples
- Radiation licensing: a state or national Radioactive Materials Licence in most jurisdictions, with an application fee, a designated Radiation Safety Officer and ongoing compliance
- Consumables: protection windows, batteries, software and library updates
Budget the recurring figure before the purchase price, because it is the one that decides whether the machine stays useful in year three.
When the answer is a $13 magnet
For most sellers, the grading decisions that actually arise are settled by a magnet, a file and a pair of cutters. Those separate 304 from 409 stainless, copper from copper-clad aluminium, and tinned from bare copper.
