None of those options remain.

  • The storage project ended, and that company later left the United States altogether.
  • The warehouse operator went bust, having charged recyclers for every tube it accepted. It shipped about 1.4 million pounds of glass onward, roughly half a percent of what it had taken in.
  • A Spanish recycler stopped accepting CRT glass, a Mexican processor stopped, and a Canadian smelter that had consumed millions of pounds a year closed permanently, having lost an average of around 30 million Canadian dollars a year over its final three years.

Investigations found abandoned warehouses across several states holding more than 10,000 tons of tubes and glass between them, including one estimated at 8,000 tons and another holding roughly 3,000 shipping containers of material. One consultancy estimated 330,000 tons stockpiled nationally, which remains the only aggregate figure anyone has published.

Federal rules require a CRT processor to recycle 75 percent of what it accepts in a calendar year, with an exemption needed above that. A survey of officials in 27 states found that no processor in any of them held such an exemption.

What is left

Two routes of consequence. A lead smelter in Missouri continues to process CRT glass to recover the lead. And one Illinois processor turns the glass into a frit used in ceramic tile production.

The safety rule

Free routes worth checking first

Municipal programmes vary enormously and several major cities accept televisions free within residency and size limits. Published city guidance shows free drop-off up to 36 inch tubes in one large city, free acceptance of any type at a facility in another, and free curbside special collection in a third.

Others charge. One city gives residents two free tube sets a month and then charges $20 each.
