Treadmills and Weights: $37 of Metal, and the Part Worth Selling Instead

A stripped treadmill is 155 pounds of metal worth about $37. Weight plates are worth three and a half times more sold than scrapped. Values, dismantling, and the electronics rule.

Exercise equipment is heavy, awkward and worth very little. A stripped treadmill yields about 155 pounds of metal worth roughly $37 at our board, against published counter quotes of $10 to $30 and professional removal costs of $75 to $200 a piece. Weight plates are the exception in the other direction: a 300 pound set is about $43 as scrap and sells for $150 to $300 secondhand, roughly three and a half times more.

The recurring problem with this category is not value, it is getting the thing out of the basement.

The treadmill, taken apart

Motor22 lbCopper motor$7.48
Console and control board6 lbMixed e-scrap$4.80
Steel rollers and hardware14 lbLight iron$1.85
Total metal155 lbAbout $37

A whole machine weighs 200 to 300 pounds, so roughly a third of it is belt, deck board, plastic shrouds and foam that no yard pays for.

Notice the wiring line. Three pounds of harness is worth more than 14 pounds of steel rollers, which is the same pattern that runs through appliances and vehicles.

Getting it out of the house

This is the real cost, and it is why published removal quotes run $75 to $200 a piece.

Most treadmills fold and then break down further: unplug it, fold the deck, disconnect the console harness and unbolt the console, remove the upright posts at four to six bolts each. What is left is the deck and motor assembly at 100 to 150 pounds, flat and manageable for two people.

An elliptical comes apart at the arm bars, console and pedals. A multi-station home gym can exceed 500 pounds and should be dismantled where it stands rather than moved.

Free weights are the good news

Cast iron plates are dense, which makes them the best value per cubic foot in the whole category, and they have an unusually strong secondhand market.

SetScrap valueTypical resaleMultiple
45 lb$6.48$22 to $453.5x
100 lb$14.40$50 to $1003.5x
300 lb Olympic set$43.20$150 to $3003.5x

Used plates consistently sell at $0.50 to $1.00 a pound on local marketplaces, against about $0.144 a pound as cast iron on our board. Demand rose sharply during the home training boom and has stayed elevated.

So weights should almost never be scrapped. Sell them, and use the proceeds on whatever you are replacing them with.

Only the home gym and a stripped treadmill approach the roughly $30 that justifies a trip. Everything below that belongs in a load going anyway, on the arithmetic our scrap value index applies across the house.

Bicycles specifically

A whole steel bike is bought as light iron at about $3.70 because the yard cannot separate the aluminium, rubber and cabling for that price.

A stripped aluminium frame is worth about $10.20 as clean aluminium, and the components have their own value or a resale market. Practically, though, an intact bicycle is worth far more repaired or given to a community workshop than melted, which is true of almost everything in this category.

The electronics question

Consoles, touchscreens, control boards and batteries in modern machines are electronic waste rather than scrap metal, and machines with motors or digital displays should not go in general waste.

Most general yards will take a console as mixed low-grade e-scrap and pay very little. A certified electronics processor is the correct route for anything with a screen, as our electronics page sets out. Any lithium pack comes out first and goes to a battery channel.

The order that works

  1. If it works, sell or give it away. Working treadmills fetch $50 to $300, and demand peaks in January. A working machine is worth many times its metal.
  2. If it is broken, advertise it free for collection. Scrappers routinely collect within a day or two, which solves the removal problem at no cost.
  3. If nobody comes, dismantle in place and separate the motor, harness and console from the frame.
  4. Take the frame with other ferrous rather than as a trip of its own.
  5. Sell the weights separately. They are the only part of a home gym worth real money.

What this metal pays around the world

Scrap is a global market priced in US dollars, but what reaches a seller depends on trade position, freight to the nearest consumer and how many buyers compete locally. The table below converts the same grade into each market’s own currency and units at the day’s exchange rate, and shows the factor we apply.

Method

Component weights are typical figures for domestic machines and vary widely by model and specification. Whole machine weights, counter quote ranges, removal costs and resale prices are from published disposal and marketplace guides.

Grade prices are our own daily board, documented on the editorial policy page with live figures on the board. The motor rate is a published yard rate rather than one of our grades, as explained in our motors and compressors analysis.

We do not buy scrap or take referral fees, and the advice to sell rather than scrap weights and working machines runs against our own interest as a price publisher.

Questions people ask

How much is a treadmill worth as scrap?

A stripped treadmill yields about 155 pounds of metal worth roughly $37 at our board, and published counter quotes run $10 to $30. A whole machine weighs 200 to 300 pounds, so about a third of it is belt, deck board and plastic that nobody pays for.

Should I scrap my weight plates?

Almost never. Used plates sell for $0.50 to $1.00 a pound on local marketplaces against about $0.144 a pound as cast iron, roughly three and a half times more. A 300 pound Olympic set is $43 as scrap and $150 to $300 secondhand.

How do I get a treadmill out of a basement?

Dismantle it where it stands. Unplug it, fold the deck, disconnect the console harness and unbolt the console, then remove the upright posts at four to six bolts each. What remains is the deck and motor assembly at 100 to 150 pounds, flat and manageable for two people.

Is a bicycle worth taking to a scrap yard?

Not really. A whole steel bike is bought as light iron at about $3.70 because the yard cannot separate the aluminium, rubber and cabling. A stripped aluminium frame is about $10.20, and an intact bicycle is worth far more repaired or donated to a community workshop.

What do I do with the console and electronics?

Treat anything with a screen as electronic waste rather than scrap metal. Most general yards take a console as low-grade mixed e-scrap and pay very little; a certified electronics processor is the correct route. Remove any lithium battery first and send it to a battery channel.

Will a scrapper collect exercise equipment for free?

Frequently, yes. Advertising a broken machine free for collection on a local marketplace usually finds a taker within a day or two, which solves the removal problem at no cost against professional removal quotes of $75 to $200 a piece.

Which part of a treadmill is worth the most?

By value per pound, the wiring harness. Three pounds of harness is worth about $8.37, more than 14 pounds of steel rollers at $1.85. The motor follows at about $7.48 for 22 pounds. The steel frame is most of the weight and less than half the value.

Is a home gym worth a trip to the yard?

A multi-station unit at around 350 pounds of steel is about $46, which does clear the roughly $30 a trip costs. An elliptical at $13 or a weight bench at $8 does not, so those belong in a load that was going anyway.
