Surabaya is Indonesia's trading city for metal. A cluster of established scrap trading companies works out of East Java, several of them long-standing exporters and importers, and the port at Tanjung Perak gives them reach that inland yards do not have.

The scrap market in Surabaya
Surabaya occupies the middle of the chain. It is not the largest generator, which is Jakarta, and it is not the largest consumer, which is the Banten steel belt. What it has is traders: companies that buy, grade, consolidate and move material, several based around Kedung Cowek and the eastern industrial corridor, with decades in the business.
For a commercial seller that concentration is useful. Traders competing for the same material in the same city is the condition under which quoted prices reflect the market rather than a single buyer's convenience. For a small seller it matters less, because a trader consolidating for export or for a mill is not geared to a single small load.
East Java also has its own steel and manufacturing base, so some material stays in the province rather than travelling. That gives Surabaya two routes for the same metal, which is unusual in Indonesia and generally good for the person selling it.

What pays well in Surabaya

- Industrial ferrous from East Java manufacturing, close enough to local mills to avoid long haulage.
Selling scrap metal in Surabaya: rules, ID and payment
A trader is a different counterparty from a yard. They buy to sell on, so they are pricing against what they can get elsewhere, and they will usually tell you what that is if you ask. Agree grade and price per kilogram before weighing, and if you are selling regularly, ask whether they want a standing arrangement. Consistency is worth more to a trader than any single load.
Before any sale, check the live board above, sort by grade and get quotes from two or three buyers; the best scrap price guide covers the routine and the calculator turns a weight into a figure at today's price. To judge whether a local quote is competitive, our note on telling a well-paying yard from a headline rate sets out the benchmark test.
Surabaya scrap price FAQ
What is the scrap copper price in Surabaya today?
As of the latest update, the indicative price for clean number 1 copper is about Rp 205,458 per kg in IDR. Surabaya yards typically quote within a few percent of that figure either side, depending on grade, volume and the buyer; the live board above shows all fifteen grades.
Why is Surabaya important for Indonesian scrap?
Because it is where the trade concentrates. A cluster of established scrap trading companies operates out of East Java, several of them long-standing exporters and importers, with port access at Tanjung Perak that inland yards do not have.
Is a trader better to sell to than a yard?
It depends on volume. Traders buy to move on, so they price against what they can get elsewhere and competition between them helps you. For a single small load a local yard is usually the more practical route.
Does East Java melt its own scrap?
Some of it. The province has its own steel and manufacturing base, so material has a domestic route as well as a shipping one. Two routes for the same metal is unusual in Indonesia and generally works in the seller's favour.
Are Surabaya prices different from the national board?
The board on this page is the Indonesia indicative level, and Surabaya yards trade around it rather than exactly on it. Local competition, freight to the nearest consumer and the day's export demand set the spread, which is why two quotes in the same city can differ by several percent on the same morning.
Sources and methodology
The Surabaya board uses the Indonesia indicative prices: global exchange benchmarks (COMEX copper, CME aluminum and steel, NYMEX platinum and palladium, IMF monthly lead, zinc and nickel) multiplied by typical yard recovery shares, a local market factor of 0.90 and the day's exchange rate. The full method, the recovery shares and the correction policy are on our editorial policy page; local notes on this page are reviewed against published dealer information and reader corrections sent to info@scrappricetoday.com.
Prices are indicative and for information only; they are not offers to buy or sell. Yard quotes in Surabaya vary by grade, volume, condition and buyer.
