The scrap market in Rayong
Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate opened in 1990 and is managed by the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand, a state enterprise under the Ministry of Industry. It houses five industrial estates and a deep-sea port, and the 151 factories within it include petrochemical plants, oil refineries, power stations and iron and steel facilities.
That produces plant scrap rather than consumer metal: structural steel, pipework, stainless, alloy and heavy non-ferrous from maintenance, turnaround and decommissioning work. The Amata City Rayong and WHA Eastern Seaboard estates add automotive, electric vehicle and electronics manufacturing to the mix.
Rayong is also a place where waste handling is watched closely. The World Resources Institute has described Map Ta Phut as one of Thailand's most toxic hot spots, citing a history of air and water pollution, industrial accidents and illegal hazardous waste dumping. Whatever one concludes from that, the practical consequence for anyone moving material here is that oversight is tighter and a buyer's licensing matters more.

Selling scrap metal in Rayong: rules, ID and payment
Industrial material from a petrochemical estate is not automatically ordinary scrap. Metal that has carried oil, chemicals or process residues may fall into hazardous waste handling rather than straightforward recycling, and the licensing for that is separate. Ask what a buyer is permitted to handle before agreeing anything, and keep documentation of where the material came from. For clean structural steel and manufacturing offcut the usual commercial practice applies.
Before any sale, check the live board above, sort by grade and get quotes from two or three buyers; the best scrap price guide covers the routine and the calculator turns a weight into a figure at today's price. To judge whether a local quote is competitive, our note on telling a well-paying yard from a headline rate sets out the benchmark test.

As of the latest update, the indicative price for clean number 1 copper is about THB 397.78 per kg in THB. Rayong yards typically quote within a few percent of that figure either side, depending on grade, volume and the buyer; the live board above shows all fifteen grades.
What is Map Ta Phut?
Thailand's largest industrial estate and the world's eighth-largest petrochemical hub, in Rayong Province. It opened in 1990, covers 166 square kilometres, and houses five industrial estates, a deep-sea port and 151 factories including iron and steel facilities.
What kind of scrap comes out of Rayong?
Plant material rather than consumer metal: structural steel, pipework, stainless and alloy from maintenance and decommissioning, plus automotive, EV and electronics offcut from the Amata City and WHA estates.
Is there anything to be careful about?
Yes. Metal that has carried oil, chemicals or process residues may be treated as hazardous waste rather than ordinary scrap, with separate licensing. Map Ta Phut has also been described by the World Resources Institute as one of Thailand's most toxic hot spots, and oversight in the area reflects that.
Are Rayong prices different from the national board?
The board on this page is the Thailand indicative level, and Rayong yards trade around it rather than exactly on it. Local competition, freight to the nearest consumer and the day's export demand set the spread, which is why two quotes in the same city can differ by several percent on the same morning.
Sources and methodology
The Rayong board uses the Thailand indicative prices: global exchange benchmarks (COMEX copper, CME aluminum and steel, NYMEX platinum and palladium, IMF monthly lead, zinc and nickel) multiplied by typical yard recovery shares, a local market factor of 0.93 and the day's exchange rate. The full method, the recovery shares and the correction policy are on our editorial policy page; local notes on this page are reviewed against published dealer information and reader corrections sent to info@scrappricetoday.com.
Prices are indicative and for information only; they are not offers to buy or sell. Yard quotes in Rayong vary by grade, volume, condition and buyer.
