Davao is the rare Philippine market where ferrous scrap has a consumer in the same city. SteelAsia's Davao Works in Bunawan District, commissioned in 2014, is the country's largest steel mill at 600,000 tonnes a year. That changes the arithmetic on heavy material in a way no amount of negotiation does.

The scrap market in Davao City

Most Philippine scrap travels a long way before it is melted. Davao is the exception. SteelAsia's Davao Works sits in Bunawan District, was commissioned in 2014, and is described by the company as the largest and most modern steel mill in the country, with a capacity of 600,000 tonnes a year. It was one of two mills serving Mindanao when it opened. For anyone selling heavy ferrous in Davao, that proximity is the single most useful fact on this page: the freight component that suppresses steel prices across most of the archipelago is much smaller here.

That does not mean a household seller is quoted mill prices. A junk shop still buys by weight, still consolidates, and still takes a margin. What changes is what happens above the shop: the consolidator has a short journey rather than an inter-island one, and competition among buyers for genuine tonnage is sharper. The effect shows on demolition and industrial lots far more than on a sack of household metal.

Where the scrap yards are in Davao City

  • Bunawan District, where SteelAsia's Davao Works is located.
  • The industrial corridor around the port, where consolidators handle commercial and demolition volume.
  • Junk shops across the city districts, buying household and commercial material by weight.

What pays well in Davao City

  • Heavy ferrous and demolition steel, which has a genuine local consumer rather than a long journey ahead of it.
  • Structural and rebar offcuts from construction, close to what the mill actually rolls.
  • Separated non-ferrous, which travels well regardless and should never go into a mixed ferrous load.

Selling scrap metal in Davao City: rules, ID and payment

The national rules apply and there is no scrap dealer licence to check. For volume that might go to a consolidator rather than a junk shop, ask what the buyer does with the material: a buyer feeding the Bunawan mill is a different proposition from one shipping out of the region, and it is a reasonable question to put directly.

Before any sale, check the live board above, sort by grade and get quotes from two or three buyers; the best scrap price guide covers the routine and the calculator turns a weight into a figure at today's price. To judge whether a local quote is competitive, our note on telling a well-paying yard from a headline rate sets out the benchmark test.

Davao City scrap price FAQ

What is the scrap copper price in Davao City today?

As of the latest update, the indicative price for clean number 1 copper is about ₱686 per kg in PHP. Davao City yards typically quote within a few percent of that figure either side, depending on grade, volume and the buyer; the live board above shows all fifteen grades.

Is there a steel mill in Davao City?

Yes. SteelAsia's Davao Works is in Bunawan District, was commissioned in 2014, and has a stated capacity of 600,000 tonnes a year, which the company describes as the largest in the Philippines. It was one of two mills serving Mindanao when it opened.

Does having a mill nearby mean better scrap prices?

On heavy ferrous, yes, in the sense that the freight component that suppresses steel prices elsewhere in the archipelago is much smaller here. It affects demolition and industrial lots far more than a household sack of metal, because the saving is in transport rather than in the metal.

Should I sell to a junk shop or a consolidator in Davao?

For household volume, a junk shop. For real tonnage, ask consolidators directly and ask what they do with the material. A buyer feeding the local mill has a shorter route and a different cost structure from one shipping out of the region.

Are Davao City prices different from the national board?

The board on this page is the Philippines indicative level, and Davao City yards trade around it rather than exactly on it. Local competition, freight to the nearest consumer and the day's export demand set the spread, which is why two quotes in the same city can differ by several percent on the same morning.

Sources and methodology

The Davao City board uses the Philippines indicative prices: global exchange benchmarks (COMEX copper, CME aluminum and steel, NYMEX platinum and palladium, IMF monthly lead, zinc and nickel) multiplied by typical yard recovery shares, a local market factor of 0.86 and the day's exchange rate. The full method, the recovery shares and the correction policy are on our editorial policy page; local notes on this page are reviewed against published dealer information and reader corrections sent to info@scrappricetoday.com.

Prices are indicative and for information only; they are not offers to buy or sell. Yard quotes in Davao City vary by grade, volume, condition and buyer.
