The question is not clean or replace. It is soot or ash, because soot burns off and ash never does. This works through the symptoms that separate them, then counts the value of the old filter against the quote.

Soot burns, ash does not
A diesel particulate filter traps two things. Soot is unburnt carbon, and the exhaust gets hot enough to burn it off during regeneration. Ash is the mineral residue left behind by engine oil additives, and nothing the engine can do removes it.
That single distinction decides everything:
- A filter blocked with soot responds to regeneration, which is a $100 to $300 job.
- A filter loaded with ash does not respond to anything the engine does, and only thermal cleaning or replacement helps.
- A filter that is cracked or melted has failed structurally, and no cleaning method rebuilds it.
Mileage and warning frequency are the practical proxies. Constant warnings at high mileage point to ash; a first warning on a car that does short journeys usually points to soot.
Diagnose the cause before spending
A DPF rarely fails on its own. Injectors, EGR valves, turbo seals and a failing pressure sensor all block filters, and short-journey driving prevents regeneration from ever completing.
An unfixed cause blocks the new filter too. That is how people end up paying twice for the same problem, and it is why the tool asks about diagnosis before it recommends anything.
Your old filter is worth something
This is the part missing from every repair estimate.
