Lithium cells are the one scrap stream where the safety rule matters more than the price. They are bought at roughly $1.50 to $2.50 a pound at US yards that accept them, against $0.23 a pound for a lead-acid battery, but they must never be mixed into any other load. Fire incidents at waste and recycling facilities reached a record in the most recent full year of tracked data, and loose cells in a mixed load are the main cause.

The economics are also stranger than most scrap. The value is not in the metal you can see; it is in a powder called black mass that only appears after shredding.
Why lithium is priced differently
A lead-acid battery is priced off the lead in it, so the calculation is simple weight times a metal price. A lithium cell is priced off its cathode chemistry, which you cannot see from the outside.
After collection, packs are discharged, sometimes disassembled to cell level, then crushed or shredded into black mass, a mixture of cathode and anode powders containing lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese, plus copper and aluminium from the current collectors and casing.
Black mass is the tradeable commodity, not the battery. That is why a buyer asks what chemistry you have before quoting.
Not all lithium is worth the same

In that published NCM analysis, lithium accounted for around 14 percent of the weight of those three metals but about 55 percent of their value, which is why lithium price swings move black mass quotes so sharply.
And swing they do. One benchmark assessment of battery-grade lithium carbonate rose from a low of $7.50 to $8.60 a kilogram in the middle of last year to $20.00 to $22.50 a kilogram by late February, an increase of roughly 264 percent.
The safety rule, stated plainly
Never put lithium cells in a bin, a mixed scrap load, or a lead-acid battery pile. A damaged or shorted cell can enter thermal runaway, which is not an ordinary fire and is not put out by ordinary means.
The person tracking publicly reported waste and recycling facility fires in the United States and Canada since 2016 recorded the most recent full year as the worst on record. Industry guidance now centres on early identification and isolation of suspect batteries, staff training, safe storage and emergency planning built specifically around lithium fire behaviour.
Practical handling for anyone with cells to move:
- Tape the terminals or bag cells individually so nothing can short.
- Keep damaged, swollen or punctured cells separate and tell the receiving facility before you arrive.
- Do not stack loose cells where terminals can touch metal.
- Store cool and dry, never in a hot vehicle.
- Never crush, puncture or open a cell to see what is inside.
Where the industry actually is
The recycling chain has a gap in the middle, and it is worth understanding because it explains why household quantities are hard to sell.
Shredding capacity in the United States has been reported running at more than twice the available scrap, while refining capacity sits at a fraction of shred output, so much black mass is still exported to Asia for finishing.
That imbalance has consequences. Two large operators building downstream refining capacity ran into severe difficulty, one entering creditor protection and the other filing for Chapter 11 after raising more than $1.1 billion, in both cases on cost overruns and policy shifts rather than on the technology being wrong.
Meanwhile the volume keeps rising. One forecast puts end-of-life and production scrap available for recycling above 2.5 million tonnes by the end of the decade.
What this means for a household or a small business
- Power tool packs, e-bike and scooter batteries, laptop cells and phone batteries all go to a battery-specific collection point, not a scrap yard and not a bin.
- Retailer and municipal take-back programmes are the normal route for household quantities, and they are usually free.
- A commercial quantity is worth a call to a specialist buyer, who will ask about chemistry, condition and packaging before quoting.
- Do not expect scrap-yard convenience. Most general yards refuse cells outright because their insurance requires it.
- Never sell or ship damaged cells without declaring them, since transport of lithium batteries is regulated and damaged cells are handled differently again.

Price ranges for lithium battery scrap and black mass are attributed in the text to published trade assessments and yard price listings, and they are ranges because chemistry, condition and packaging change the quote more than location does. Lead-acid figures are from our own daily board, documented on the editorial policy page.
We do not publish a live lithium price because there is no single public daily settlement for it in the way there is for copper or aluminium; black mass is assessed by subscription price reporting agencies. Treat every figure here as orientation and get a written quote for any commercial lot.
We have deliberately not described cell opening, discharging or teardown. The fire behaviour is the reason, and no household quantity of metal justifies it.
