Stripping a car before you scrap it drops the rate you are paid on everything that remains. Tick what you would pull and this works out whether it beats selling the car complete.
Rates are the live complete-vehicle and shred figures and move daily. Part values are indicative bands that vary by part number, condition and buyer. Title requirements, tyre disposal fees and converter documentation rules differ by jurisdiction; confirm locally before selling.
The completeness paradox
Yards do not pay one rate for cars. They pay a complete-vehicle rate and a shred rate, and the gap between them is why this decision is not obvious.
A complete car with the engine, gearbox and converter still fitted is a known quantity. Once you remove the drivetrain, what is left is a body shell that only a shredder wants, and the whole vehicle drops to shred grade.
That toll applies to the entire weight, not to the part you removed. It is charged before any part you pulled earns anything, which is why the calculator subtracts it first.
The parts that beat the toll
Five things have specialist buyers and do not trigger the drop:
The catalytic converter, priced by its stamped code, and frequently worth more than the metal in the rest of the car. The net cost calculator prices it by make and model.
The alternator and starter as cores, if they pass the eligibility checks. A rebuildable alternator is $18 to $80 against $10 to $12 as scrap.
Aluminium wheels, if they are clean alloy and the tyres are already off.
The battery, which has its own market and which yards often deduct for anyway.
What to leave attached
The engine and gearbox. Removing either is what triggers the drop. A transmission is worth $11 to $53 as scrap, which does not cover the toll it causes. As a core to a committed rebuilder it can be worth $60 to $400, but that needs a buyer lined up before you touch it, not after.
Body panels, doors and glass. Weight without a specialist market. They are paid at the same rate attached or not, so removing them is unpaid labour.
The wiring harness. Real copper, but fine-strand automotive wire recovers under 50 percent, which puts it below the stripping break-even. Unless you own a granulator, leave it in.
Two costs the calculator does not show
Tyre disposal is a charge, not a payment. Fees apply per tyre, and four tyres can cost more than four rims are worth. Take them off beforehand where you can.
A picked-over car is harder to sell whole. Once you start, the complete-vehicle route closes. Decide before you touch anything, because the decision is not reversible.
Before weighing anything in, the core or scrap checker walks the checks a rebuilder applies and shows both values side by side.
Before you call
Sort the title first. A car without one fetches less almost everywhere and in many jurisdictions cannot be sold for scrap at all.
Then get a whole-car quote so you know the number you are comparing against, and ask whether it is the complete-vehicle rate or the shred rate. The whole versus part-out guide covers the full sequence, and the buyer routing tool covers where each pulled part actually goes.
