Refurbished sits in the middle and behaves predictably, which is why it suits owners who want a known outcome rather than the best possible one.
The two free checks before any of this
Both cost nothing and one of them occasionally makes the whole question disappear.
Check the warranty against the in-service date, not the model year. Coverage is 8 years or 100,000 miles, and capacity below 9 of 12 bars within that window obliges Nissan to repair or replace at no cost. A 2017 Leaf first sold in 2018 is covered into 2026. Many owners discover more coverage remaining than they assumed.
Check open recalls with your VIN. Nissan recalled certain 2019 to 2022 Leafs over battery overheating during DC fast charging, with a free software update as the remedy. Check nhtsa.gov/recalls before paying for anything.

Generation and chemistry traps
Four specific cases where a swap is not a swap.
The 30 kWh chemistry degrades faster. Early 2016 and 2017 packs earned that reputation, which is why used 30 kWh units sometimes cost more than 24 kWh units despite the reputation, and why a cheap 30 kWh rebuild can be false economy.

Where to get quotes, and how many
Get at least three: a Nissan dealer, an independent EV specialist, and a salvage-based specialist. Prices for the same job differ by thousands.
Dealers give predictable, like-new performance and preserve warranty and resale position. Their pack warranty on a new OEM replacement is commonly quoted at capacity below 9 bars for 5 years or 60,000 miles, though shorter terms appear in some accounts, so get it in writing.
Independent EV specialists are more flexible on used, refurbished and upgraded packs, and labour is often lower. Many offer 2 to 3 year warranties on refurbished packs, which can exceed what a dealer offers on a new one. Vet the shop carefully.
Salvage specialists are cheapest and carry the most risk, because health is unknown without testing.
One thing to insist on with all three: a written quote separating pack, labour, core credit and warranty term. Without those four lines the numbers are not comparable.
When the answer is to stop spending
