Where to Find Scrap Silver

Silver is in many things and worth collecting from few. Contacts, relays, solder and film, the cadmium rule, and where it is present but not worth chasing.

Silver turns up in more places than most people expect and is worth collecting from very few of them. The difference is concentration: a mirror and a motor starter both contain silver, and only one is worth opening.

Start with the safety rule, because it is not obvious

Silver electrical contacts are usually attached to their copper backing with cadmium-bearing solder, and cadmium fumes are carcinogenic.

Cut contacts off. Do not heat them off. A torch is the intuitive tool and the wrong one. Snips, a cold chisel or a small shear do the job without producing fumes, and the guidance to cut rather than heat comes from the refiners who buy this material.

Where silver is concentrated enough to bother

Electrical contacts and relays

The best source outside the jewellery drawer, and the one most people walk past.

Contacts sit wherever a circuit is opened and closed under load: motor starters, contactors, circuit breakers, switchgear, thermostats, elevator controls, forklift and railway equipment. Industrial and commercial gear carries far more than domestic.

Two things decide whether a lot is worth anything:

How much backing is still attached. A contact as removed is mostly copper or brass with a silver button on the face. Refiners are blunt about this: uncut contacts commonly assay at 20 percent silver or less by weight. Close-cutting the silver face off the backing is what turns a low-grade lot into a payable one, and it is the work that decides the payout.

Whether it contains tungsten. Tungsten inserts are used to harden contacts for long service. They add weight, contribute nothing, and complicate refining, so a tungsten-loaded lot pays much less. A rough field check: a silver contact face is normally round or square and flat, while a bent or oddly shaped face usually means an insert.

Sterling and silverware

Higher purity than anything industrial, and a completely different market. This does not go to a scrap yard at all.

Silver solder and brazing rod

Used in HVAC, refrigeration and plumbing work, with silver content typically between 5 and 56 percent depending on the alloy. Offcuts and part-used rods accumulate in trade vans and workshops.

The alloy designation is on the rod or the packet, and it decides everything. Without it a refiner assays, and an unmarked mixed tin is priced conservatively.

Older photographic and X-ray film

Silver halide film carries recoverable silver, and medical and industrial X-ray archives are the meaningful volume. Consumer film is not.

This is a bulk business rather than a household one. Specialist recyclers handle it, and quantities below several hundred pounds are rarely worth shipping.

Where silver is present but not worth chasing

Stated plainly because a lot of writing on this subject is not.

Mirrors. The silvering layer is microns thick. There is no economic recovery.

Silver-plated flatware and trays. Plating is measured in microns. Plate is worth something as an object to the right buyer and effectively nothing as metal, which is why it is worth checking marks before scrapping. Anything marked EPNS, silver plate or A1 is plated, not solid.

Most circuit boards. Boards contain silver but gold and palladium dominate the recovery economics, and they are priced as boards rather than by individual metal. The board value calculator prices them by grade.

Solar panels and modern electronics. Real silver content, real recovery difficulty, and processes that are not available to an individual.

Selling it: not to a scrap yard

Silver does not have a yard price the way copper does. A general yard has no assay capability and will treat contacts as low-grade copper, which is the single most common way this material is undersold.

Sell to a refiner or a precious metals buyer. They assay a sample to establish silver content and pay against it, and dealing with the processor directly rather than through an intermediary is where the margin sits.

Expect assay, not a scale price. That is the point of the process and the reason it takes longer than weighing in scrap.

One honest note about prices

This site publishes live indicative prices for copper, aluminium, brass, steel and the platinum group metals. Silver is not on the board, because silver scrap is settled by assay against spot rather than at a yard grade rate, and publishing a per-pound figure would imply a market that does not work that way.
