Foam is not one material, and the answer flips depending on which you have. Polystyrene packaging foam is easy to recycle chemically and almost impossible to collect economically. Polyurethane foam from mattresses and cushions is the opposite: chemically difficult, yet it feeds an established market where bonded recycled foam makes up roughly 85 percent of all carpet cushion sold in the United States. The foam most people worry about has no route. The foam nobody thinks about has one of the most successful recycling markets in the country.

That inversion is worth understanding before you look up a drop-off point for the wrong material.

The feel test in the third row does most of the work. Squeeze it: if it crumbles into beads you have expanded polystyrene, if it springs back you have polyurethane, and those two go to completely different places.

The counterintuitive part

Why polyurethane should be the hard one

Flexible polyurethane foam is a thermoset. It is formed by a chemical reaction between a polyol and an isocyanate, and those bonds are strong enough that the material cannot simply be melted and reused the way a thermoplastic can.

On paper that makes it far harder to recycle than polystyrene, which melts readily.

Why it works anyway

Because somebody built a market for it. Scrap foam is ground into small pieces, bonded with adhesive and heat into a large cylinder, and that cylinder is peeled into thin sheets.

The product is bonded foam, usually called rebond, and it is the carpet cushion under a very large share of American floors. Industry figures put it at approximately 85 percent of all carpet cushion sold, and around 90 percent of the flooring underlay market. Virgin polyurethane underlay is now the small niche.

Nearly a billion pounds of reclaimed polyurethane scrap went into rebond in a single reported year.

Mattresses, where the volume sits

Mattress foam is the largest single stream of recoverable polyurethane in a household context.

  • Around 300 million pounds of polyurethane foam a year goes into US mattresses.
  • A single recycling facility has been reported recovering 800 pounds of foam a day.
  • The sector's recycling council reports having helped recycle more than 15 million mattresses that would otherwise have gone to landfill.
  • Recovered foam is baled and shipped to roughly thirty processing facilities nationally.
  • Rebond markets beyond carpet cushion now take 5 to 10 percent of output in North America, for car acoustic insulation, gym pads, pet beds and mattresses.

The practical consequence is that a mattress is one of the few bulky household items with a genuine recycling infrastructure behind it, even though most routes still charge a fee.

Why memory foam complicates it

Mattress foams come in three families that look similar and behave differently: high resilience, conventional, and viscoelastic, which is what memory foam is. They differ in the molecular weight of the polyol used to make them.

Sorting those apart is the barrier to higher-value chemical recycling back into polyols, because discarded mattresses arrive in unknown and inconsistent mixtures. Mechanical recycling into rebond is more tolerant, which is why it dominates.

Insulation board is a building material

Extruded polystyrene board, the coloured rigid sheet used in construction, is not packaging and is not handled like it.

It goes through a construction and demolition waste route rather than a household one. Some manufacturers and regional programmes take clean offcuts, but there is no general drop-off network equivalent to the packaging one.

Polyethylene and the soft sheet foams

The pale, flexible sheet foam wrapped around furniture and electronics is usually polyethylene rather than polystyrene. So are camping mats, pipe lagging sleeves and many shoe inserts.

It is a thermoplastic and technically recyclable, but household collection barely exists. Industrial generators can find buyers; a household cannot. Reuse is the realistic answer, and it protects a parcel better than bubble wrap.

Ethylene-vinyl acetate, the rubbery foam in shoe soles and play mats, is harder again and has effectively no household route.

How to work out what you have

  1. Squeeze it. Beads mean expanded polystyrene. A spring-back means polyurethane. A soft bend without damage means polyethylene.
  2. Look at the colour. Rigid pink, blue or green board is extruded polystyrene insulation.
  3. Try to tear it. Polyurethane tears with a ragged edge. Polystyrene snaps and sheds beads.
  4. Check where it came from. Packaging, bedding, construction and footwear are four different materials that all get called foam.
  5. Look for a code. A 6 means polystyrene, but most foam carries no marking at all.

Common mistakes

  • Treating all foam as one material and looking for a single drop-off point.
  • Taking mattress foam to a packaging foam programme. Different material, different processors.
  • Assuming insulation board is packaging. It is construction waste.
  • Believing memory foam is more recyclable because it is expensive. It is harder to sort and worth less to a processor.
  • Putting any foam in a kerbside bin. None of these belong there, and all of them contaminate.
  • Burning any of it. Polyurethane and polystyrene both produce toxic fumes.
  • Cutting mattress foam up before checking. Programmes generally want the mattress intact so it can be dismantled properly.
